Freediving, Apnea, breath hold diving. With a plethora of names, this is one of the world’s most extreme yet paradoxically relaxing sports.

An “apnea” is a period in which breathing is stopped. In this instance it involves doing so underwater and diving to depths below surface level – the current world record is help by Herbert Nitsch to 214 meters. Freediving involves a number of meditative breathing techniques to calm the body and mind, before free falling or swimming vertically down into the blue.
